A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
