Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach featured at a lower division club. Today, he is focused on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a standing for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His club career included top European clubs, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. The coach highlights the national team spirit and rejects terms such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command the entire field and we dedicate long hours toward. Our responsibility to not only anticipate with developments but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To create a system enabling productivity in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good of English football,” he comments. “The physicality, the flexibility, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

He earned his license with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry on to his staff with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants except Barry.

His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to work together again. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
