Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, featuring a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
