Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the company, and look forward following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the official corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's determination to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the governing body," the organization stated.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Epstein.
The bill will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has stated he intends to approve the measure, after changing his position on the issue following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected emails released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned several prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to link the official to prominent international personalities.
Personal Response
After the emails were made available with the general audience, Summers said he took "complete accountability for my poor choice to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was no longer associated with the organization.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
