Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
