Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Recent Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
